Introduction
A global economy dictates maintaining standards of customer value through the management of activities, not costs. Activity-based costing (ABC) informs us about the work that consumes resources and delivers value in a business. This operational information facilitates making long-term strategic decisions about such things as production or service mix, sourcing, lower prices to hold market share, and buy-or-make alternatives.
In order for a company to compete in today’s marketplace with quality and flexibility, it needs to utilize activity-based information to focus primary attention on underlying causes of work, called work drivers. The customer is “king” and demands shorter time frames while placing emphasis on quality, service, and distribution.
Activity-based costing (ABC) is a methodology for understanding the activities, processes, services, and products of a business. This technique identifies activities and the work drivers that cause work to be performed, and then associates these activities to products and/or services to be delivered to the customer. Activity-based costing is a management tool as well as a financial tool. The course focuses on the principles of Activity Based Costing (ABC), which is shown as the response to the challenge of complexity.
